Purity of Heart: Pursuing Holiness as the Pathway into God's Purpose
727 words, about 4 min read
Purity of heart is not a secondary spiritual virtue. It is the determining factor for everything. Jesus said in Matthew 5:8 , "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Not the most educated. Not the most gifted. Not the most experienced. The pure in heart. Purity is the prerequisite for spiritual vision, and spiritual vision is the prerequisite for effective ministry.
Psalm 24:3-4 asks and answers the question directly: "Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully." Clean hands and a pure heart. These are not conditions that God overlooks for the sake of gifting or calling. They are the conditions of access.
The location of your heart is the essential determining factor as to whether you are going to make it into the Kingdom of Heaven. Purity of heart is also the determining factor as to whether you will be successful in ministry. And you cannot fake purity. Though you may be slicker than a snake, you will never be able to fake purity of heart when dealing with God, or those who truly know God.
Matthew 6:22-23 explains the connection between heart purity and spiritual perception: "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" If your heart is not pure, you will not be able to clearly see what God is doing. You may think God is leading you in one direction when, in reality, you are moving farther away from Him. The impure heart distorts spiritual vision.
- Whole body full of light
- Clear spiritual perception
- Sees what God is doing
- Whole body full of darkness
- Distorted spiritual vision
- Thinks it moves toward God while moving away
Titus 1:15 confirms this from the opposite direction: "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled." A defiled heart does not just affect one area of life. It corrupts the entire lens through which a person sees, interprets, and responds to everything. This is why a minister with an impure heart can hear the same Word as a pure-hearted minister and come away with a completely different, and often destructive, application.
Pursuing Holiness, Not Perfection
Pursuing holiness is not about perfectionistic rule-keeping. It is about becoming mindful of your soul. When you become truly mindful of your soul, you begin to pursue holiness. And within holiness, you begin to discover the purpose of God. Hebrews 12:14 gives the non-negotiable standard: "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord."
1 Peter 1:15-16 grounds it in God's own character: "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy." And 2 Corinthians 7:1 gives the practical instruction: "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."
When you begin walking in righteousness, you eventually come directly into the purpose and will of God for your life. Then you begin to realize how much greater His purpose is than you. It is not about us. It is about His purpose. The purpose of the Church is to glorify Jesus Christ, so that Jesus Christ may glorify the Father. If we are not fulfilling that purpose, then all of our activity becomes meaningless.
Proverbs 4:23 gives the governing instruction: "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." The word "issues" means the outflows, the outcomes, the fruit. Everything that comes out of your ministry flows from the condition of your heart. Protect it. Guard it. Pursue its purity with the same intensity you would pursue any other ministry goal, because without it, all other ministry goals are built on an unstable foundation.
Purity of heart is the pathway. Holiness is the road. And at the end of that road is the full purpose of God, waiting for those who were willing to pay the price of a clean heart to arrive.
