Trying Prophecy and Spiritual Claims: Discerning Genuine Spiritual Direction from Error
750 words, about 4 min read
Not everything that is spoken in the name of God is from God. That is not a cynical statement, it is a biblical one. And every minister who is serious about navigating the Kingdom correctly must develop the ability to try, test, and discern the spiritual claims and prophetic words that come before them. The stakes are too high to accept spiritual direction simply because someone delivers it with confidence or emotion.
1 John 4:1 gives the standing command: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." Try them. Not accept them. Not reject them automatically. Try them. That requires a standard, and Scripture provides one.
Deuteronomy 18:22 gives the most basic test: "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him." Accuracy matters. If a person repeatedly prophesies things that do not come to pass, that must be considered. It cannot be explained away indefinitely. The standard is clear: if it does not come to pass, the Lord has not spoken it.
The problem is that when we have a love for personalities or even our own will, we will not mind putting a spin on false prophecies to convince ourselves that we did not miss God. If you have ever spoken or believed a false prophecy, the very thing you need to do is examine why you believed it in the first place. On those who double down: the apparent falseness of the prophecy should have encouraged them to repent and examine their hearts. However, many have justified themselves before God. That justification is spiritually dangerous.
The Fruit Test
Matthew 7:15-16 gives the fruit test: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits." The fruit of a genuine prophetic ministry is not platform size or emotional impact. It is alignment with the Word, accuracy in fulfillment, and the fruit of righteousness in the life of the prophet. These are the things that must be examined.
2 Peter 1:20-21 establishes the source of genuine prophecy: "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Genuine prophecy is not produced by the will of man. It is not manufactured by ambition, emotion, or the desire to impress. It comes from holy men and women who are moved by the Holy Ghost. And it will always align with the established Word of God.
Testing Claims About Your Calling
There is also a specific type of prophetic claim that must be carefully examined: the claim that God cannot accomplish His purpose because another person prevented Him from using someone. That claim must be examined against Scripture. The gifts and callings of God are without repentance (Romans 11:29). All of the gifts were set in the Body by God, the Father of us all. It is His plan and decision to use each member of the Body in the manner He has determined. No man was given a vote in that decision, and therefore no man can revoke it by prophecy.
Apostolic order reveals the mystery of Christ and exposes the perspective from which the Church should be seen. By this knowledge, a prophet or any hearer can judge prophecy. Prophecy should be judged from the perspective of the mystery of Christ. That means every prophetic word must be weighed against the full counsel of God's Word, the pattern of Christ's ministry, and the established order of the Kingdom.
We cannot receive something simply because someone says, "God told me." Everything must be tried by the Word. This is not unbelief. This is spiritual maturity. It is the responsible stewardship of the Kingdom assignment God has given you. An untested word accepted carelessly can redirect a ministry away from its God-given measure and into someone else's agenda. Guard your assignment by guarding what you receive.
- Test every wordWeigh it against Scripture before receiving it
- Check the fruitExamine the life behind the word, not just the delivery
- Refuse unaccountable claimsReject any word that says someone blocked your calling
Blessed are those who obey the Lord, not those who simply hear many words, but those who carefully try what they hear, receive what is genuinely from God, and walk faithfully in the direction He has truly given.
